trailer tips

height of the tow ball coupling

When coupling the trailer , the height of the tow ball coupling must be carefully observed.

Unfortunately, it happens again and again that the height of the device on the train car deviates significantly from the normal range. This often occurs in towing vehicles (such as off-road vehicles) with a larger axle suspension travel. Help can be provided, for example, with special tubes that have to be mounted on the towing bars of the trailer and thus lift the ball coupling.

It would be advisable for you to have a suitable trailer device installed in a specialist workshop.

Ball couplings for trailers are built according to DIN 74058 or ISO 1103 with a height of 430 ± 35 mm. The height of the ball head from the car must therefore be in the range of 395 – 465 mm.

Exposed tow ball head

The ball head must always be free and ensure a vertical pivoting range of 25° up and down as well as a horizontal pivoting range of 20° to the left and right.

Attention – tilted trailer

Trailers that are not horizontal due to different coupling heights show increased coupling wear on the ball and also in the coupling.

The necessary pivoting movement is restricted.

The trailer can become detached more easily.

Handling is impaired – there is an increased risk of snaking.

The braking behavior is worse.
