Height of the ball coupling
At the Coupling the trailer The height of the ball coupling must be paid particularly close attention.
Unfortunately, it frequently happens that the height of the coupling device on the towing vehicle deviates significantly from the norm. This often occurs with towing vehicles (such as SUVs) that have greater axle suspension travel. A solution can be found, for example, with special tubes that are mounted to the trailer's drawbars and thus raise the tow ball coupling.
It is recommended that a suitable trailer hitch be fitted to your vehicle in a specialist workshop.
Tow ball couplings for trailers are manufactured according to DIN 74058 or ISO 1103 with a height of 430 ± 35 mm. Therefore, the height of the ball head on the car must be within the range of 395 – 465 mm.
Exposed ball joint
The ball head must always be exposed and allow a vertical swivel range of 25° upwards and downwards, as well as a horizontal swivel range of 20° to the left and right.
Caution – tilted trailer
Trailers that are not level due to different coupling heights exhibit increased wear on the ball and also in the coupling itself.
The necessary swivel movement is limited.
The trailer can detach more easily.
Driving behavior is impaired – there is an increased risk of swerving.
The braking performance is worse.
